Sunderkand Path
The Sunderkand chapter of the Ramcharitmanas, sung through in one sitting — usually on a Tuesday or Saturday.
About this Ritual
Sunderkand is the fifth chapter of Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, the one describing Hanuman's journey to Lanka. It is read in a single unbroken sitting and it is the most commonly booked recitation in Mumbai households, largely because it is sung rather than chanted and the family can join in. The path takes around two hours at a proper pace, closes with a Hanuman aarti, and is followed by prasad. Families often hold it after a difficulty has passed, or before something demanding. Tuesday and Saturday are the traditional days. It can be read on any day, and a great many families read it on the anniversary of something they are grateful for.
