Bhoomi Pujan
The ground-breaking ceremony before construction begins — performed at the site, before the first digging.
About this Ritual
Bhoomi Pujan is performed at a plot before construction starts, and traditionally before the ground is broken at all. It asks permission of the earth and of Vastu Purusha, and it marks the north-east corner where the first foundation stone is set. The ceremony includes a naag pratishtha — a small silver serpent and a kalash placed into the earth at the marked point — followed by a havan. It is held at a muhurat, which for construction is usually calculated fairly precisely, so give as much notice as you can. Bring anyone who will be building: contractors and masons are traditionally present and are given prasad at the close.
